2018 Great American Campout!

It is time again for the Great American Campout®!

What a perfect excuse to pop the tent in the backyard, tell scary stories and make s’mores over a fire (or grill). Let’s face it, camping is FUN. And it doesn’t involve video games, internet, or television.

In fact, one of the main reasons for the Great American Campout® is to encourage parents and kids to leave their screens at home and enjoy time in nature by spending a night under the stars.

Another great reason is fundraising- NWF uses funds raised in the Great American Campout® to support programs that address the problems of America’s indoor childhood and the health risks associated with them.

Want to participate in camping and outdoor activities at one of the local State Parks? Both False Cape and First Landing have programs this weekend specifically designed for the Great American Campout®.

False Cape State Park:

Great American Campout – Ever wanted to experience primitive camping? Not sure you know what to bring? Is it for you? Well, here is your chance to learn what it takes to become a primitive camper, but with some help. Reserve your space and learn valuable tips on backpack camping, the newest and greatest gear, how to plan a trip, and being prepared. Then take all your newly learned knowledge and plan your next adventure. For more information please contact the park. First Landing State Park:

Great American Campout – Celebrate the Great American Backyard Campout, a nationwide event, with our staff. Reserve a campsite and then join in some of the exciting activities in our park. Even if you aren’t camping with us or setting up in your backyard, you can still come to our programs for a full weekend of adventure. Do you want to explore on your own? We also have Park Packs you can check-out at the Trail Center. These themed backpacks have everything you need to get started exploring the outdoors, including binoculars, birdsong players, nets, magnifiers, and field guides. All programs are free.

Programs include: 10 a.m. Swamp Stomp 8:30 p.m. Night Hike Call 800-933-7275 to make camping reservations or just come for the day. Campsites are between $24.00 and $41.00 per night plus sales tax and a $5 transaction fee. If coming for the day only, there is a per car parking fee of $7 (in-state) or $9 (out-of-state).
