Meg Leahey is the Community Outreach Coordinator for VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads in Norfolk, VA. She matches volunteers with local volunteer opportunities throughout Hampton Roads. Meg writes a monthly guest post with updates on opportunities to volunteer with the kids!

Family Volunteerism

As a child, I always volunteered with my parents for various events. Whether it was working the awards stand at the Special Olympics, or cleaning up trash from the neighborhood parks, my parents always made sure I was active in the community.

As I grew older I volunteered for mission projects with my church, helped with fundraising for various causes during high school and in college became Service Vice President of my sorority. In short – volunteering those hours with my parents at a young age made a large impact on my life and I recommend all parents actively volunteer with their children.

Here are a couple organizations that could use the help of the family:

  • Every Monday in June and July, children ages 6-11 can volunteer with a parent at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk. For more information call (757) 627-6599.
  • For the month of May, Park Place School will be hosting Homework Club on Tuesday-Thursday from 4pm-6pm. Volunteers must be 15 or older and volunteer applications are required of all volunteers. The application must be received 5 days prior to your first volunteer shift. Be sure to submit an application to Annie Blakey at [email protected] or by fax to (757) 624-3700.
  • Physicians for Peace is in need of volunteers to help with sorting of wheelchairs, canes, walkers, etc. Volunteers ages 13-17 must be accompanied by an adult. Contact Kenneth Hudson (757) 407-0364 or [email protected]
  • The Good Mojo Thrift Store (benefitting ForKids) receives donations daily and constantly need volunteers to help sort, organize, and move the donations/merchandise, hang clothing, and arrange items on the sales floor. They need groups and individuals to work at Good Mojo on a regular and reoccurring basis and can also take youth volunteers from local elementary, middle and high schools. No background check is required and training is provided at the site. Contact Marina Evans at 622-1194 or [email protected].

Is your child too young, but you still want to show them how to give back? Help them organize a book, clothing, blanket or canned food drive for a local nonprofit organization. Or help your child fundraise for a nonprofit with a lemonade stand or bake sale. For a list of all of our nonprofit members, visitwww.volunteerhr.org.

For adults looking for volunteer opportunities while the kids are away, visit our HandsOn Calendar for our nonprofit organizations that could use some helping hands for special events!
