Reminder! Hampton Roads: Summer Reading Programs 2023

Please note, most of these Summer Reading Programs require you to sign up to participate. Make sure you sign up at the beginning of the Summer to log all of your 2023 Summer reading!

In addition to the reading logs and prizes many of the area libraries (and many bookstores) will be having special events and activities throughout the summer. Make sure to check out the great variety of local talent and entertainment!

CHESAPEAKE PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

• June 12 – August 12, 2023
• Track your goals, earn prizes and Dizzy dollars.

HAMPTON PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• All Together Now Summer Reading Program: June 12 – July 30, 2023
• Check out some of the great programs available through the Hampton Public Library Summer Reading Program on our website Calendar  or the HPL Website.
• Additional Info: We are going to have our program for children, teens and adults. Readers can sign-up through Beanstack.com under ‘Hampton Public Library’ or through the Beanstack app on your mobile device. As you complete each week’s reading badge, visit the library to pick up your coupon prize! All other badges earn additional entries into the raffle prize drawings for Week 5 and Week 7. Complete the weekly reading challenges to be entered to win a “My Weekend Is Booked” tote bag set! One winner from each of our four library locations.

NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• Summer Reading Challenge BINGO: June 19 – July 31, 2023 
• Check out all of the great programs available through the Newport News Public Library Summer Reading Program on our website Calendar or the NNPL Website.
• Additional Info: The Challenge is open to all ages with prizes at registration, midway, and completion, along with weekly prize drawings. Participants will log reading minutes and complete activities on a digital Bingo card through Beanstack.

NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• All Together Now Summer Reading Challenge: June 24 – August 5, 2023. 
• Check out all of the great programs available through the Norfolk Public Library Summer Reading Program on our website Calendar or the NPL Website.
• Additional Info: Readers (youth & Adults) will log their books on their Norfolk Public Library Beanstack account for a chance to win weekly random prize drawings. There will also be a grand prize drawing for both youth and adults at the end of SRP.

PORTSMOUTH PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• All Together Now Summer Reading Challenge: June 19 – July 31, 2023
• Check out some of the great programs available through the Portsmouth Public Library Summer Reading Program on our website Calendar or the PPL Website.
• Additional Info: Readers from birth to 17 years of age will log their books on their Portsmouth Public Library Beanstack account. Once they have completed the badges for their age category (0-8 years old, 9-11 years old, and 12-17 years old), they will be eligible to pick up a prize!

POQUOSON PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM

• All Together Now Summer Reading Program: June 19 – August 11, 2023
• There are also programs highlighting family fun at the library all Summer, the listings can be found on our website Calendar and on the PPL Website.
• Additional Information: Complete 5 activities on Challenge Card 1 to earn a prize. Repeat the same on Challenge Cards 2 and 3 for more prizes and to win the Summer Reading Challenge. All ages can participate and it’s a great way to engage the entire family in reading this summer!

SUFFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

• Come Together Now Summer Reading Challenge: June 17- August 13, 2023
• Check out some of the great programs available through the Suffolk Public Library on our website Calendar or the SPL Website.
• Additional Information: Register or log in to Beanstack to participate and track your books read. Paper logs and Bingo cards will be available for pickup at our North Suffolk and Morgan Memorial branches for those who do not wish to log electronically. Register your whole family! You can log the books you read your children and the books they read you! If you have a favorite for bedtime that you read every night or a story they just can’t get enough of, you can log the same title multiple times. You can also log any stories you listen to at our library Storytimes! Each time you log it increases your chances to win!

VIRGINIA BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

• Additional Information: Summer Reading Challenge offers age-specific goals, incentives and creative activities to encourage children and families to read during the summer months. Get started with tracking on Beanstack.

WILLIAMSBURG REGIONAL LIBRARY SUMMER READING CARNIVAL 

• June 1 – August 31, 2023

• Additional Information: The WRL Summer Reading Program offers your family a way to
  enjoy reading during the long weeks away from school. We have a program for younger kids, older kids, and adults. We also have a fantastic lineup of performers, crafts, and storytimes. Register on Beanstack or at the library and log all of your reading from June 1 – August 31. You’ll earn points for reading, writing reviews, and completing activities in Beanstack. Visit the Summer Reading Room each week between June 13 & July 31 to share your reading and redeem your rewards. Pick out a book to keep during Free Book Week, from August 1-7

YORK COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM 

• Summer Reading Challenge: July 3 – August 12, 2023

• Additional Information: Keep track of your reading through the library’s Beanstack site or the Beanstack app. Don’t forget to visit the library to participate in all of the fantastic fun we’re planning.

Summer Reading Program at MWR Libraries – Military Families in Hampton Roads

The Big Free Bookstore’s 100 Days of Summer Reading

• FOR ALL AGES! Join anytime between June 1 through September 8. Turn in your reading log at The Big Free Bookstore to earn bonus prizes, depending on your age category, and extra entries for the grand prize drawing. Also, don’t forget to grab the weekly themed arts and crafts bag to make at home. Anyone who completes the challenge during this time will receive a Certificate and a goody bag and will be entered for a chance to win the grand prize for each category. But you don’t have to stop there—the more you read, the more chances of winning! When you have reached the goal for your category, we will continue to accept reading logs to receive extra raffle tickets.

Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading Program

• Kids in grades 1-6 can read any eight books this summer and record them in your Summer Reading Journal. Then bring their completed journal to any participating Barnes & Noble Store to receive a FREE book off of their list. See 2023 details here.

Books-A-Million’s Summer Reading Adventure 

• Children read any 4 books from the reading list, write about the books you’re read in your log book and show your completed log book to a store associate to receive your free gift (while supplies last). See 2023 details here.

Chuck-E-Cheese’s Reward Calendar Program

• Chuck-E-Cheese’s Reward Calendar Program is ongoing. You can find many different reward calendars on the Chuck-E-Cheese website. One of them tracks books read- when your child reads each day for 2 weeks (and completes the form) it can be redeemed for 10 free play points. Note, a food purchase is required.

Scholastic’s Summer Reading Home Base is currently underway (May 4 – September 7, 2023)

• By creating an account on Home Base, kids can join a community of readers and will be able to read books and stories; attend author events; interact with their favorite characters; play book-based games and activities; join dance parties; and more!
